The best engagement photos almost never come from the most prepared couples — they come from the most relaxed ones. But a little preparation is what makes relaxing possible.
We are Lens of Fariha, an affordable photographer duo based in Queens, NYC. We have shot engagement sessions across nearly every borough, and the same eight things separate a smooth shoot from a stressful one. Here is exactly how to prepare.
1. Book the Golden Hour, Not Noon
The single biggest upgrade to your photos costs nothing: timing. The hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset give you soft, warm, flattering light. Midday sun creates harsh shadows under the eyes. When you book, ask your photographer for the exact golden-hour window for your date — we always send ours.
2. Pick Two Outfits, Not Five
One slightly dressed-up look and one relaxed look is plenty for a one-hour session. Coordinate, do not match — complementary tones photograph better than identical outfits. Avoid tight logos and busy patterns; they date a photo and pull attention off your faces.
3. Choose a Location That Means Something
The bridge where you met. The park bench from your first date. A meaningful location relaxes you instantly because you are not posing in a random spot — you are revisiting your story. If nothing comes to mind, that is fine too; we know quiet NYC corners that are not overrun.
4. Plan for the City, Not Against It
New York is crowded. Embrace it or avoid it deliberately — both work, but decide in advance. Early mornings give you empty iconic spots. Evenings give you energy and light trails. Tell your photographer which feeling you want.
5. Practice One Thing: Walking
Posed couples freeze. Walking couples relax. Practice slowly walking together and talking — it is the easiest way to get natural movement and real laughter. We will direct the rest.
6. Hydrate, Eat, and Sleep the Night Before
This sounds obvious and nobody does it. Tired, hungry, dehydrated faces show up in close-ups every time. Treat the shoot like a small event.
7. Bring One Prop That Is Actually Yours
A ring box, the dog, the coffee order you always share. Real props beat rented ones because you interact with them honestly instead of holding them awkwardly.
8. Trust Your Photographers and Forget the Camera
With a two-photographer duo, one of us is always catching the in-between moments while the other directs. You do not need to perform. The more you ignore us, the better your gallery looks.
